How to *actually enjoy* reading Quran

Transform Quran recitation from a task into a source of connection

I remember listening to the recitation of Shaykh Al-Minshawi as a young child.

There’s something about his recitation, you see.

As soon as his voice fills the room, listeners are instantly captivated.

The clarity, the beauty, the emotional depth in every word. His recitation, along with that of many other senior mashayekh, is almost like listening to how the Quran was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ.

How does he do this? The way he brings life to the words of the Quran, making each letter sound as though it is being revealed in that moment, is mesmerising.

It made me realise how much more powerful the Quran becomes when it is recited with proper Tajweed, when each letter is given its due right.

I can’t help but think to myself. This. This is the ultimate goal.

To not just read the Quran; but to read it in a way that makes the Quran come alive in my heart, just like Shaykh Al-Minshawi does.

But let’s be real for a moment.

Many of us struggle with reciting the Quran properly. You might feel frustrated because no matter how hard you try, your recitation doesn’t sound the way you want it to. Maybe you’ve been trying to improve your Tajweed but you’re overwhelmed by the complexity of the rules, or perhaps you’re unsure if you’re doing it right at all.

It’s disheartening to feel like your recitation isn’t quite there, especially when you know how much beauty and reward there is to be found in reading the Quran correctly.

So, how can we create this deep connection with the Quran in our own lives, especially during this blessed month of Ramadan?

It all comes down to three things:

  1. Recognise that the Quran loves for you to read it.

Not only that, but it defends you. On the Day of Judgement, the Quran will stand as your witness.

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite the Quran, for it will come as an intercessor for its companions on the Day of Judgement." (Sahih Muslim)

Imagine that: the Quran, your companion, defending you, saying, And the Quran will say: I kept him from sleeping during the night; let me intercede for him. And they will be allowed to intercede.” (Sahih Hadith)

Knowing that the more you read, the more the Quran will intercede for you, is a powerful reminder that can turn your recitation into a loving, mutual relationship.

  1. Feel the reward with every letter.

Every single letter you read brings you one deed, and each deed is multiplied by 10.

Just imagine: if every letter was worth $10, how many of us would keep a Mus’haf in hand at all times? The reward is real, tangible, and growing with every recitation. Even the shortest surah, Surah Al-Kawthar, brings about 500 hassanat (good deeds); and Surat Al-Fatiha alone brings in over 1,200!

As you recite the Quran, try to visually picture the mountains of hassanat forming around you. Subhan’Allah.

  1. Ponder and reflect on the Quran.

The Quran wasn’t revealed just for us to finish reading it; it was revealed for us to ponder. Allah ﷻ says, “Do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?” [47:24]

We should be asking ourselves as we read, “What is Allah telling me in this verse? What does He want me to understand and act upon?”

If we stop treating the Quran as something to rush through and start treating it like a conversation with our Creator, we’ll feel the difference in our hearts. We’ll feel the Quran speaking directly to us.

So, how can you move from simply reading to truly living with the Quran this Ramadan?
